Denton Author Event 2014 ..,. The Indie Bookshelf

Just wanted to post a little blog about DAE 2014, put on by 

The Indie Bookshelf.

I have been to many author signings and I can happily say, this one by far was probably the best one to date!

It was exceptionally organized!

Everything ran smoothly.

Every Author was extremely friendly and took time with each and everyone of us. 

I have been to events where authors did not have books to sell! Isn't that the point? 

Every Author had books and SWAG. Some, were absolutely hilarious! 

Each author was gracious and signed everything I put in front of them.

I will admit, I had a few major fangirl moments, with Andrea Smith and Nicole Edwards. I met new authors and even watched a few sign their first book! It was truly a lovely experience. 

The venue, The Holiday Inn was perfect!

Clean and very helpful.

I volunteered for the first time ever and will HAPPILY do it again for this event and ANY TIME the ladies over at the Indie Bookshelf ask!

 Indie Bookshelf put on a GREAT event.

I look forward to working with them again.

This is the second book in the series. You do need to read the first one for some background and for the base of the story arc to continue. I loved the first book and was kinda stalking the Author and Amazon waiting for it to release. I got sucked into the lives of Sergey, Evie, David, Toni and Dragan. I am so very happy that I did too. I wanted to know what was going to happen with Dragan and Toni. You could see the sparks from the first moments. They just made you want to be a fly on the wall as they went at each other with their words. You could tell from the start that Dragan loved making her mad. She wasn't sure about him, was he a bad guy or a good guy. Such conflicting information came from him. But he is her best friends brother, they would be seeing each other, whether she wanted it or not. 

"Are you all right?" Dragan had moved across the buffer of chairs to position himself next to me. His black eyes willful and shining, considering me. 

"I'm fine." Instantly my defenses were back in place. I did not want to be alone with this man. 

"Actually," I continued. "I think I'll go. I've had enough for the night. Move over and let me out." I tried to maneuver past the big man but to no avail.

Dragan ignored my dismissal and attempt to escape. "Is it hard to watch?"

I looked up at him, puzzled."Is what hard to watch?" I asked.

"Your best friend. Happy. Not needing you. Or is it that you're not the center of attention?"

That got my focus and I spun in the chair to stare at my accuser. "Who the fuck do you think you are? You don't know me. " I started to stand byt Dragan had my arm in his grip refusing to let go. 

"You don't fool me Antonina. I know what women like  you  are all about,"Dragan professed.

"Oh, do you...?This should be entertaining."

"Yeah," he answered with a laugh. "You use your sexuality as a weapon to get what you want. You drag around dumb fucks by the balls. You piss around at work and make things harder on Rosa. You screw other bartenders out of good tips because you're the one with tits. You. Are. A. Selfish.Brat." he eyed me up and down, a look of aversion on his face. There was the fucking look again. Disgust! Where the hell was this coming from?

 "Oh, this is comical coming from you. You fooled Evelyn but I don't understand how you've hosed Sergey? you're a goddamn criminal. But somehow my behavior offends you."I bit out trying to get my arm back. It didn't work.

 I tried to stand again but Dragan's hand remained on my elbow holding me in place. "You are coming to Evelyn's dinner party tomorrow night. You're goin' to suck it up and we are going to act like we like each other."

"Screw you Mikhailov."

Now from reading this you probably think Dragan is an ass. Well you would be right, kinda. He wants Toni but, can't do anything about it yet. He has been watching her. He thinks he knows her. He learns that he really doesn't. She is hiding things from everyone. She is working 3 jobs. She drives an old beater. What is really going on with her? Dragan and Sergey also have family issues that need to be dealt with as well. Dragan is not what everyone thinks. He has had a very hard life, with the scars to prove it. 

Once they do finally stop thinking and talking, wow. The Mikhailov brothers are definitely all alpha. They protect what is there. Even if the women say they aren't theirs. There are misunderstandings between Dragan and Toni. She breaks everything off and decides to start dating someone else. I wanted to smack her for being scared, but I did get it. Thankfully Dragan has her number. ARGH..... no spoilers, y'all need to read this so we can talk...In this book you also get to spend more time with Sergey and Evie.That made me very happy. We also get to meet the youngest brother. I know his story is going to be HOT. Holy crap, the epilogue....Nicolai.  Damn. see she reduced me to one word sentences. This is another 5 clock read for me. Now I just want Amand Hough to write really really fast. I need to read Nicolai's story.

I was lucky enough to happen on this book. Sounded like it would be a good read from the blurb. I was not expecting to be totally engrossed in the life of Evie. Damn am I glad that I like to cruise Amazon from time to time (every day, whatever).

We start out meeting Evie as a take in nurse at the jail. She has been working the ER at the hospital and decided she needed a change. She also thought that since her brother was always getting in trouble that she might end up seeing him. She has not seen him in 3 years. He is persona non grata after the last time when she was almost killed. She has two fabulous friends. David and Toni are there for her no matter what and don't put up with any crap.I absolutely adored David and Toni. They are supportive, caring and very protective. Then she meets Sergey when he is bringing in a new inmate. their first meeting could have gone better....

"You work here, babe?" His voice sounded surprised and pleased. 

"I am not your babe, but I am new at this facility."

The officer acknowledged my censure and nodded. His eyes sparkled, amused.

"So," Toni started downing the remaining Bloody Mary from her glass, "what poor bastard have you been toying with this week, Evelyn?"

 I feigned innocence, sipped my coffee and reused to take the bait. Both David and Toni felt I was too hard on men. never giving them a chance. Deliberately misunderstanding or ignoring romantic overtures. It was all probably true. i had never really met a man who had the capacity to interest me for any length of time. Men were a disappointment. I work and shop. That is about it. 

 David and Toni waited for a response. I am not a big sharer. My friend know this and make up for it by sharing way too much. But I was feeling charitable and the homeless surfer and sexy Latino had been on my mind. 

"Actually, I did meet someone at work this morning."

 I described the handsome Latino detective and my moment with the homeless surfer dud in the lounge. My friends stared until David spoke up. 

"Don't you watch cop shows,Evie? The gruff, scrappy-looking badass with a taste for expensive booze are all the rage. "

I didn't

 "I thought the dark-haired cop was cute." I countered. "Besides, the surfer dude looks like he washes in gas station restrooms."

Before I could finish my rebuttal, Toni started in, "But dark-haired cop didn't ask your name. Creepy surfer did. Next time you see him, ask his name and give him yours."

 "You got that whole sexy pin up look. Long, silky dark hair, sparkling blue eyes,the killer pouty mouth.Great tits. Get your head out of your butt and pay attention."

I looked at David for support. He shrugged. "If its any consolation, Evie,I think you're hideous."

When they next meet Sergey takes over, and HOLY HELL, I loved it. He is definitely an alpha male. He didn't ask, he told her they were going out. The interaction from these two is just amazing. The chemistry leaps off the pages. I was so totally engrossed in Sergey and Evie. Couldn't put it down. There was also a mystery of why people were looking for her brother. Someone breaks into her place. She meets his brother who is warning her that people want what her brother stole. Is he a bad guy like her brother. He seems to be in with the mafia.

I want to tell you guys so much about this book but, you know I don't like to spoil a book. So you need to read it. I can tell you that moments after I finished the book, I went looking for book 2. I couldn't get Sergey,Evie, Toni, David, and Dragan out of my head. I love, love the name Dragan. I even went to the author begging to know when the next book would be out. She let me know that it would be out soon, thank goodness.I can say that i started several books that I needed to write reviews for and was not able to get into any of them. I still was stuck on the deliciousness that was Sergey. This book was steamy,loving, sad at times, fun, and at times frustrating. I did want to smack Sergey and Evie both at times. Once they got their heads on straight, damn. I give this one a full 5 clocks. Ohhh and the epilogue with Toni and Dragan. Yeah, just saying.

Are you looking for a quick read about vampires and werewolves? Well this is definitely not the book for you then. If you want a longer novel (about 667 pages) with action, romance, suspense, humor, well developed characters, and heartbreak then you NEED to read this book. This is not some little pansy werewolf trying to find a mate. This is a story of 4,000 year old beings that have loved and lost and still fight.  

I was intrigued by the blurb for this book. The story of Skye starts out with blood, a lot of blood.  It's 3 years in the past... 

 It felt as if she was awakening from a psychotic nightmare- one that had take nearly a decade to end. 

 Her arms were crossed over her chest as her body trembled uncontrollably in shock.

 The blood that covered her from head to toe was drying now, offering her bare flesh a  layer of protection from the cold night air.

And that quickly I was totally hooked. I had to know what happened. What could have happened to cause the blood? Was it Skye's blood? A decade long nightmare?

We start in the present day, in a bad neighborhood. Not your regular bad neighborhood either...

 The only positive thing about working the graveyard shift in this neighborhood was that there were never any clients around to bother him. Unfortunately, that was also one of the biggest negatives about this job. Nobody was stupid enough to venture out after dark around here - not even the cops. People disappeared. People were violently murdered and left in dumpsters. No one ever saw or heard anything. 

 At least, that is what you said if anyone asked. 

 Bearing all this in mind, it should come as no surprise that his hand instinctively went to an ever-ready shotgun when the front door swung open. The two inch thick bulletproof glass that encased him offered very little comfort as a hooded figure slowly stepped into the lobby. 

 

There were deaths delivered by the vamps(they are known in the book as fogaraich and the werewolves are known as faol/faoil). Oh I should tell you that there are a lot of Scottish and some Irish language in the book. The author does leave some translations for the Gaelic terms and approximate pronunciations. I found this quite helpful. 

 Skye has spent years killing covens of fogaraich. They took her and her brothers after murdering her parents. Her brothers became the very things that took them and spent years torturing Skye. Once she has gotten away from them, she trains in how to kill them. She then starts hunting her "brothers" to kill them.  She does not falter in what she must do. She doesn't trust anyone. Would you? She learns that she must go to Miami to get her last brother.

In Miami she meets Miko. He knows how to fight the fogaraich and has spent years doing it.He is an ASHER. This is a group who try to kill the fogaraich as often as possible. While they are fighting them, Skye sees another one. She is not aware of the faol. She attacks him and he bites her. She will turn into a faol on the next full moon.  

 Skye's voice cut in on her pondering. " Looks like i"ll be changing about three days a month, right? The day before, the day of, and the day after the full moon. So, it'll be like PMS twice a month. I bet I'll be a real peach to be around when they coincide. Talk about upping the excuse to be bitchy."

 Aiyanna grinned. "I think it would be wise to reinforce the case on those occasions and not let any men in the area."

 "Damned straight. Wait a second, I just realized something... I really am a a bitch now, aren't I?" Skye asked.

 Aiyanna attempted to muffle her laughter as she nodded. 

 "Huh," Skye breathed thoughtfully. "Well looks like all the years I spent owning that title has finally paid off."

Skye and Miko must fly to Scotland to help her through the first change. Her is where she meets Taran the first time. He will be teaching her about the faol. He is a uber Alpha. 

 Did you hear that? Why did he have to keep slipping in those distracting little phrases? 'In case ya need me in the night','my love', 'I would nah mind an excuse to carry ya'-that last one had completely cushioned the fact that she would be in too much pain to walk. She didn't even care. 

 And why did hes accent have to make everything sound so damnably sexy? Why did every word out of his mouth have to feel like auditory foreplay? The bastard could inflict orgasms by reading aloud from the phonebook.

Skye is the first woman to complete the change. She is doing things she shouldn't be able to do for centuries. She is special, could she be the ONE? 

Okay, let me just say that I really loved this book. The interactions between Skye, Miko, Taran and Ciaran are just amazing. I found my inner ear, hearing the brogues of the guys. The snarky comments had me laughing out loud and snorting. The pot shots that all of them take at each other are awesome. I could feel the love developing. I could hear the love and friendship between Taran and Ciaran. The adoration that develops for Skye.  More than once I had to put down my kindle to take a breath. I yelled, i laughed, and I cried. I was so upset at one point in the book that was running through tissue so fast you'd have thought I dumped a pail of water on them. I was not expecting this to happen. Honestly assumed that would just have the regular feel good feeling at the end of the story. No, i felt as if my heart was ripped, still bleeding from my chest and offered up to all to watch as it slowly stopped beating.  I was wrung out by the end, and I freaking LOVED every single second of it. I was enthralled. Spent the entire night up reading, I had to know what happened. I want there to be a second book out now. I NEED to know what happens next. I hate giving away spoilers, so I will just say.... HURRY UP with the NEXT book Alisha.

****My two cents, this is exactly what you want in a novella!  Finality and so much more. 

We get to see that extreme dominant side if City, and I LOVE that man, but I wanted to just knock the crap out of him! Suzy can handle him most of the time. But jealousy just may be their downfall. 

What could possibly go wrong with Izzy planning the Bachelorette party? She knows her brother has some control issues, but does she care?  That would be a BIG HELL NO! 

I laughed and worried a bit when I saw the direction this was heading, but as always Chelle Bliss bring it home and finishes with a MASSIVE HIT! 

I really do not think I will ever get enough of the Gallo boys!!! Wait, Izzy's up next, she may show these boys a thing or two and I can't FREAKING WAIT! ***
