There was a time when surgeon Kian Forbes would have surrendered every cent of his vast family fortune if it could make Roxie Gilbert happy. That was before she skipped town, broke his heart, and sent him spinning through a string of forgettable one-night stands. He never even knew he’d fathered a child—with Roxie’s sister, no less. But in the wake of tragedy, little Lily needs a home. And Kian wants his daughter. But Roxie’s not giving in or giving up without a fight.
Fearful of her intense feelings for Kian, Roxie ran. Now that her sister’s death has brought her home, she intends to take custody of her niece and avoid Kian—easier said than done on both counts. With their wealth and power, the Forbes men are accustomed to winning. And as she and Kian are forced to spend time together for Lily’s sake, saying no to everything he wants proves impossible…even though it means risking both their hearts all over again.
Review
It has been quite a while since I last read Melody Anne, I was very much looking forward to this book.
Kian, starts off with immediate drama and pain, I didn't mind that. We get to see Kian the doctor in the beginning and pretty much the only real time we see him in "doctor action," which I did not mind. Working as a trauma doc Kian, has seen his fair share of brutality, but he wasn't ready for this set of victims.
Secrets are revealed and lives are changed in a matter of a few sentences. Giving you the set up for what you are sure is this angst filled book, not so much....that I did mind. With the truth bomb that is set off in this story and the reemergence of his "one and only love" who left him with no word 4 years ago... HELLO ANGST! But no, this brushes over things that normal ex's would yell, kick and scream about. I found myself a little let down in the drama department AFTER the first chapter.
Roxie, I found to be a tad off putting. I didn't dislike her, I just never connected with her. She was an amazing mother, I'll give her that. She fought and was fiercely in love with Lily. I could feel that in the wonderfully crafted words describing her need to be with Lily.
The story is steamy but not too much that it takes away from the story. This second chance romance and surprise child story is really a nice story with a HEA.
