My Review

First off let's talk about this author. JJ McAvoy writes beyond her years. Her voice is something that is missing in this saturated industry. Her characters are deep, and filled with so much richness, I am often rendered speechless. This is a spin off of her amazing Ruthless People series, The Children of Vice is Ethan's story. In reality it is the beginning of what I am positive is going to be her best story telling yet.
I never thought someone could take Melody's place and Ivy is not trying to, but she sure is giving Mel a run for her money. Ivy is smart and cunning, I like her and am excited to see more of her and to see her go up against, someone in the family. 
Ethan, he just makes me happy. He takes his position very seriously and I love that! He was born and raised to lead "the family." He is strong but can be brought to his knees when it comes to Ivy. He has tried his entire life to not let anyone have that sort of "power" over him. But when it comes to Ivy, the girl he has loved his entire life, he is weak. That is not good when you are head of the Irish/Italian Mob. Ethan is everything his parents would want in a son and a Ruthless leader.
We get to catch up with most of the Callahan clan's children and see what they are up to . I love that they are still in the picture as this is the next generation. Evelyn is still vital and I cracked up when she laid it all out for Ivy. We see that Dona and Wyatt are not exactly the people we thought they were. Wyatt is the outcast, choosing to help people by becoming a doctor. But was it really his choice? And Donatella, well she is dealing with "the family" the way she was taught. Always keep an eye on everything and everyone and never miss an opportunity to better one's position.   
To the very last page Children of Vice is brilliant! I am more than excited to see where Ms. McAvoy takes us in the next two books.

Buns: The Hudson Valley Series by Alice Clayton....Review by Dawn







Synopsis

Review

I have read the two previous books in this series Nuts and Cream of the Crop, which I just loved! Buns, well it fell a little flat for me.  
I remember in the other stories I cracked up and laughed so much. This story did have it's humorous moments, but I found that most of those occurred when Roxie and Natalie were around. Clara and Archie had chemistry, and I loved that the arguing let to love and some pretty implosive heavy making out. Again, it lacked in the sexiness for me.
The picture that Ms. Clayton painted was stunning. I could picture the Bryant Mountain Home perfectly. I really loved Clara being dedicated to her work and her love for helping these businesses that hired her. Archie was so funny when he let go. I loved his stuffy buttoned up structured type, playing off of Clara's bossy nature. That was for me, what worked best in this book. 
Clara's past was present every waking moment and sometimes it felt a bit suffocating. BUT, understandable her life was not easy and it haunted her. Much like Archie's haunted him. I really enjoyed that he was willing to let go and take the next step only to be met with Clara running.... again. 
I was hoping for more fun, and there is some, just not what I am use to from Ms. Clayton.  I honestly can not remember if Clara ever did taste the Hot Cross Buns, I'm not sure if that was an oversight on my part or if it never happened.

Review

Ahh, it was just like going home and visiting my favorite "not real but real in my head" family. James and Izzy, it ws so much fun catching up with them and HOLY HOTNESS! James never disappoints to deliver the sexiness. 

The story picks years later and you know how marriages are, the highs and lows, and that is where we find The Clado's . Not that they do not love each other, it's that point where the kids are needy and attentions get diverted. So when this case happens upon ALFA Investigations, James needs a submissive to work the case and we all know Izzy isn't going to let that happen. So of course James asks his wife to go undercover with him. Boundaries are tested and it is SMOKIN' HOT. I would have loved a little more drama involving the case, but the story still has a strong foundation. 

Izzy and her "sister" still make this series for me. When they all get together the hilarity ensues. When Izzy is looking for a new artist to join the shop and the ladies find out that her intent is to hire a female, I laughed so hard. The familial bond these women have makes me somewhat jealous and it's s BOOK! That takes talent of the author to make the reader long to be included.

At one point I thought I was going to have to hop on a plane and hunt down Ms. Bliss. When there is a cancer scare and who it happens to... I was not going to allow Ms. Bliss to do it, nope, not happening. She chose wisely. I know if this series is to continue someone is bound to die, I know this, but I do NOT accept it. The Gallo family is my favorite literary family and I need them to stay in tact.
Izzy is her normal hot head self and James is the only one who can tame her but can he tame her long enough to keep her safe?
